Buying a pair of Tefillin is a very special event. In order to make the right choice, understanding what goes into a pair of Tefillin will be useful. Tefillin are comprised of three components:

  • the Battim (boxes)
  • the Parashiyot (scrolls)
  • the Retsuot (straps)

At KosherScrolls.com, we offer 3 levels of Tefillin Battim quality.

PESHUTIM MEHUDARIM

These Tefillin boxes (Battim) are made from thin sheep or goat hide. They are the most economical option. However, extra care must be taken to ensure they remain in good shape, due to their weaker construction.

 GASSOT

These are made from a thick piece of steer hide to which tons of pressure are applied using industrial presses. Great amounts of time and workmanship are involved in manufacturing these Battim, which is reflected in the price. The Gassot Battim, when taken care of properly, are expected to last a lifetime.  GASSOT BLI KEMATIM (without folds)

These are the deluxe model of Tefillin boxes. They are produced using a new method of formation, which pushes the four individual compartments, that comprise the Battim, upward without creating folds in the base. This makes for a box that is more stable being that there are no folds that may shift over time.

PARASHIYOT

Sephardic scrolls are written with the Sephardic script. This is the script used by those who find their roots in Spain (and subsequently the Turkish Empire), North Africa, the Middle East as well as YemenBet Yosef script, contrary to its name, is not used by Sepharadim.

RETSUOT (straps)

We carry a variety of straps to match any budget. All our straps are top-grain leather which come from the upper portion of the hide.

Handedness

Tefillin are place on the less dominant arm. Thus, a right -handed person will wear the Tefillin on their left arm and a left-handed person will wear them on their right arm. Handedness is usually determined by which hand one writes with. But as with all matters of Jewish Law, a competent Rabbi should be consulted. If you have any questions as to the proper choice, don’t hesitate to contact us.
